About Paul Gordon

I'm Paul Gordon — a British freelance SEO consultant working with ecommerce brands, local businesses and in-house teams across the UK, US and EU.
For 18+ years I've done one thing: helped businesses grow by improving how they're found, understood and chosen — first by search engines, and now by the AI systems reshaping how people discover everything.
How I work
I don't outsource, automate or hide behind reports. When you work with me, the person you speak to is the person doing the work — auditing your site, writing the specs, fixing the problems, reading the data.
That's the entire point of hiring a freelancer with this much experience: senior-level execution, clear direction, fast turnaround, and no layers between you and the answer.
A straightforward agreement: for ongoing SEO, I ask for two months' notice to pause or stop so I can reserve capacity and plan the work. Separately agreed sprints and one-off projects follow their own scope. Ongoing payments are set up through GoCardless Direct Debit.
Experience & specialisms
Most of my career has been spent inside ecommerce and technical SEO — site architecture, migrations, crawl and indexation work on stores from boutique to thousands of SKUs — alongside local SEO campaigns and senior consultancy for in-house teams.
Platforms I've genuinely worked deep in: Shopify, Magento, WordPress, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Craft CMS and custom builds.
In recent years I've gone equally deep on AI search — entity optimisation, structured data and how systems like Google's AI Overviews and ChatGPT decide which brands to cite — and I write regularly about it in my Insights.
- Early 2000s — Web developer. Where it all started: building sites hands-on, which is why I still speak fluent developer today.
- Mid 2000s — Web project manager at a digital agency, running website builds end to end.
- Late 2000s — Head of SEO. Moved fully into search, leading strategy and delivery across client accounts.
- 2014 — Went freelance. Twelve years (and counting) of working directly with clients — no agency layers.
- Today — Still evolving: AI search, UX and conversion rate optimisation alongside the SEO, because it all pulls on the same result.
Niches along the way: manufacturing, homeware, clothing and apparel, jewellery, recruitment, SaaS, craft beer and wine brands, dentists, plumbers and local businesses of every kind — plus business services across the board.

My philosophy on modern search
SEO isn't dead — it's evolving. Search is now entity-driven and AI-interpreted: Google and LLMs don't just read keywords, they weigh brand identity, consistency, authority, structured data, sentiment and demonstrated expertise.
The brands that win are the ones that communicate clearly, structure content intelligently, and earn trust across every surface where machines are forming an opinion of them.
Some of that was always good SEO. Now it's the whole game.
Who I work best with
If you want meaningful, expert-led improvement rather than generic deliverables, we'll get on.
